Where Uncertainty Lives

Structural engineers have a reputation.

Conservative.
Heavy-handed.
“Just make it bigger to be safe.”

Sometimes that reputation comes from real experiences.

Projects where things were oversized.
Where assumptions replaced clarity.
Where loads were carried over instead of questioned

That’s not structural engineering at its best.

There’s a difference between two kinds of uncertainty:

The kind we could have resolved and the kind we never can.

The first comes from gaps.

Unclear use.
Incomplete information.
Missed coordination.

When that happens, designs can drift toward the conservative side.

Not because of physics. Because of missing clarity.

That’s not what safety factors are for.

They aren’t optional.
They’re necessary.

Safety factors don’t exist to cover gaps in coordination. They exist to protect against the uncertainty we cannot eliminate.

We use load factors.

Not as a guess, but as a calibrated response to what we know is variable.

Dead load is more predictable.

Concrete. Steel. Finishes.

We know what they weigh.

Low uncertainty. Lower factor.

Live load is different. Now we’re estimating behavior.

Offices. Balconies. Gathering spaces.

Sometimes empty.
Sometimes full.

Higher uncertainty. Higher factor.

And then there’s snow and wind.

They don’t follow patterns.
They don’t ask permission.
They don’t follow logic.

A building can see all of these loads at once.

So what do we do then?

We don’t just stack everything at its maximum.

We don’t assume full live load, peak wind and maximum snow all happening together, each at their worst.

That’s not reality.

So we use load combinations.

Different scenarios.
Different mixes.
Different factors.

Because the likelihood of everything peaking at the same time is low, the code responds accordingly.

Some loads are reduced.
Some are amplified.

Each combination represents a believable moment the building might actually experience.

It’s not about piling on safety. It’s about calibrating it to reality.

There is uncertainty we can reduce through better coordination.

And there is uncertainty that belongs to the world itself.

One should be solved with better information. The other must be handled with safety.

Load factors aren’t about being overly conservative.

They’re about being honest about what we don’t and can’t control.
